AIRPORTS IN COSTA RICA

INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS:

San Jose – (SJO) Juan Santamaría International Airport

Located in the capital city of San Jose, Costa Rica. San Jose services most international airlines.

Liberia – (LIR) Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport

Located in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica in the city of Liberia. Liberia services most international airlines.

Fortuna – (FON) La Fortuna Domestic Airport, Alajuela

Nature Air flies exclusively to La Fortuna on a daily basis from the Tobías Bolaños International Airport in Pavas just outside of Downtown San Jose. A roughly 30-minute trip, Nature Air flights are pretty affordable and great to get a glimpse of the Arenal in the distance. Taxis are easily available outside the airport which is pretty basic in itself. The La Fortuna Airport has a simple office and an open air roof with some tables nearby. If you are boarding a plane from here a US$ 5 local fee is charged at the airport.

SERVING COSTA RICA ONLY:

Drake Bay Airport – (DRK)

Near Corcovado National Park.

AIRLINES SERVING  COSTA RICA

For the best fares: 1) always check the airline’s website. You’re more apt to get in on the specials; and 2) play around with the departure days of the week. I have found Houston to San Jose on Spirit is usually cheaper on Tuesdays.

The following airlines fly from most major cities to San Jose, Costa Rica: 

American Airlines

—fares are usually more than twice as much as Spirit but includes one free checked bag under 50 pounds and two carryon pieces.

AeroMexico

Fares are more than Spirit, but less than the other guys. They usually layover in Mexico City for a really long time.

AVIANCA TACA Airlines

Fares are comparable to United.

COPA Airlines

Delta Airlines

Fares are comparable to United. One free checked bag under 50 pounds; one personal item and one carry-on free of charge.

Spirit Airlines

Always check their website for their specials. Their fares (when going through their website) are the cheapest I have ever seen—especially for last-minute flights. You can pay around $200 each way on Spirit while United charges twice that! Usually only one (maybe two) departures per day and usually with connections. Spirit charges for both checked and carry-on bags. Carry-on freebie is for one handbag, briefcase or backpack only—it must fit under your seat. Over-weight bags are considered anything over 40 pounds.

United Airlines

Charges $25 for checked bags under 50 pounds; two carry-on pieces free of charge.

US Airways

More in line with Spirit’s fares when booked well in advance. You may have to change planes with a long lay-over. Checked bags are $25 for the first bag; carry-on baggage is free for one bag plus a personal item.
